The Burnout Project
Tag with #burnoutproject when you post!
Burnout has affected many an artist across all industries, especially in our current economic time. The constant need to monetize skills have left creators feeling drained, uninspired, and disconnected from what they once loved. So I, (Dove) have created a little "challenge" to do for those who want a push to create something for themselves but don't know where, and how, to start. At the beginning of each month, a prompt will be released, and participants will use it to create a piece of art. The prompt runs from the first to the last day of the month. These prompts are tailored to be accessible, yet allow you to think deeper about a topic/style you may not have considered before. You are allowed to use any medium you feel comfortable with, and can post doodles, sketches and unfinished work. You do not need to make polished masterpieces- you just aim to make something. This journey invites anyone struggling with burnout to follow along on a low-stakes, no pressure, year-long "challenge" so that you can make some art for yourself again AND at least have something personal to show for it.With much love,Dove
JANUARY PROMPT
You and Yours(oul)
Hand-in: Full illustration JPG
Suggested Size: 8.5x11 min. 300dpiI want to kick off the 2025 drawing year with a reflection of yourself in a self-portrait or rather, a self-portrait with your reflection. These are two identities within you- your Body and your Soul. One that you are and one that you want to be (or truly feel you are) inside.
It will take some self reflection and some thinking to come up with what you want your soul to look like- it can be a mishmash of things you resonate with, it can be a blob of colors, it can even be your OCs if you've modeled them after a version of "you".Illustrate yourself (your outwards self/sona) with the reflection of your Soul. The pair can be doing any activity, even simply standing and holding hands. It can be as funny or as serious as you like.
The environment however must be a place special to you. Your grandma's kitchen, the street you grew up in, the alleyways of your home city etc. It should be a place where you have felt something, and where you will always feel drawn to.You can make it as colorful or as simple as you want, in any medium you choose but, try to experiment with patterns, texture and lighting to bring some dynamic energy to the piece.
Start with some sketches to map out where you want your figures to be. They should be the focal point of your piece.Have fun creating!
Takeaways of this project:
Multiple Character Interaction
Composition
Reflection and character design of an original character
Characters in a "setting"
Abstract ideas, not necessarily literal representations

Has music ever made you feel something? Have you listened to a song that had your brain imagining cool fight-scenes to? A lyric that simply had you go “ah yes, this fits my character perfectly”?
Choose a lyric or song, and make an art piece for it. It can be a comic, an illustration, an object, an animation- anything you feel that can convey the feeling you feel when you listen to the particular melody. You are free to use yourself, a sona, an OC or a character in the piece. The catch? It must be in a limited palette. Choose TWO colors only. You are allowed to use these two colors, utilizing shades and tints to bring your image to life. Include the lyric (if you have one) in the piece. Song does not have to be in english.*If this is too hard, you are free to incorporate other colors as this is not meant to be frustrating! If you have a completely different concept for this, feel free to illustrate that instead. Now go forth, listen to your musics, daydream, and create.
Takeaways of this project:

It's time to wade through the dust!
For this month, we're going to give some love to your beloved forgotten OCs. I'm sure there's a few tossed away in corners, gathering mold... Pick them up, brush them off, and give 'em a nice pose- because they'll be your subject for this month.Would you continue their story? What happened to them? Think of how they'd look like if you continued to draw your character. You are free to go whichever direction for this piece.
